Right?! My very first toy was a hard plastic vibrator. Gods that thing was uncomfortable to insert!! I ended up just using it to stimulate my clit because actually fucking myself with it was painful. That was almost 20 years ago (damn I am getting old!). It was the only sex toy I owned for a long time, until I finally got my hands on one of the original rabbit toys. That was a game changer. Never could I have imagined that A) I would own an entire under-the-bed drawer full of toys or B) They would get so techy.
